Gordon Marsh has Benjamin's birth year as 1776.
Daniel Benjamin Marsh, according to his old Bible, was ordained as a preacher at Poughkeepsie, NY on June 30th, 1790. He may have lived at Poughkeepsie prior to moving to Bennington around 1801. So he may have lived in NY before moving to Bennington, VT.
Daniel may have been known also as Benjamin. He graduated from H.U. (Harvard or Hebrew University ?) in 1795. He was a preacher at Bennington Congregational Church (now known as 1st Church) which is the oldest organized church in America. He spoke (preached a sermon) on the day of the General Election at Montpelier, October 14, 1813 before the Hon. Legislature of VT. (found in THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF VERMONT, p. 159 @GenealogyLibrary.com.)
Gordon Marsh had Benjamin's birth year at 1776. Benjamin was living in Bennington in 1806 and was known as Rev. Daniel Marsh. On July 7, 1808, he was installed as pastor of "First Church", the very lovely old historic church that still stands on the hill in Old Bennington with all its many old gravestones. Some who died at the Battle at Bennington were buried here. Also, poet, Robet Frost, is buried there.
In 1820, Rev. Daniel and his family left Bennington and settled at Rupert, VT, for a short time. In his latter years, Rev. Daniel, Sr. went to Jamesville, NY. The Union Congregational Society was organized in October 1807; and soon after, they built their first church situated about one mile east of Jamesville. Daniel B. Marsh was said to be its first pastor. (More research is needed since 1807 is prior to his commitment as pastor in Bennington). Perhaps Daniel's grandson was also a preacher at Jamesville, NY. Changes took place in the Congregational church and in 1878 it became First Presbyterian Church of Jamesville under another Rev. Daniel Marsh.
See "HISTORY OF BENNINGTON" by Jennings pp. 99 - 103; also "EMERGENCE OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY IN VERMONT 1760 - 1880 written by Robert E. Shalhope, published by the John Hopkins Press in 1996.
Rev. Daniel Marsh, Sr.'s Bible was last known to be owned by Mr. Cady Marsh, Jamesville, Onondaga Co., NY.
