"Woodbridge Record": first proprietor of Gardiner's Island; was originally Engineer in service of Prince William of Orange, d 1663
"A Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New-England...", Lyon, came from Scotland in 1635 and erected the fort at Saybrook; went to East-Hampton, Long Island in 1655
They bore the first child on record (David) in Ct.
After leaving he settled Gardiners Island, N.Y. He purchased this land from the Indians.
There is also info on Lion where a man named Richard Smythe purchased land from him in 1663. Lion was deeded the lands by Chief Wyandanch, Sachem of the Long Island Montauks, after he had helped get back the chief's kidnapped daughter from a party of raiding Narraganseett Indians. It is now called Smithtown.
Descendants of Lion Gardiner have the right to bear Heraldic Arms, and can belong to the Society of Colonial Dames.
