Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Also served in U.S. Civil War. Enlisted as a private in the 4th Battlion of Infantry. Commissioned 1st Lt. in the 20th Masssachusetts Regiment of Volunteers. He was seriously wounded three times, at the battles of Ball's Bluff, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. Left the army after three years, having been commisssioned lieutenant colonel although mustered out with rank of captain.
