Civil war hero
An avid breeder of horses, Russell not only kept a horse stud in Milton (on his Canton Avenue estate, the "Home Farm," now the Indian Cliffs neighborhood), but also became widely known in American racing circles.
Colonel in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry in the Civil War. He served as both police commissioner and fire commissioner of the city of Boston (the Russells lived at The Agassiz, 191 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston's Back Bay during the winter.)

WR p 35 'he was a seafaring man in the earlier part of his life; but afterward purchased and conducted a large tannery, which is still standing by the bridge in upper Mystic. The house which he occupied is also standing at the angle of the roads -- opposite the site of the tannery -- south-east of the church.'
