John Lothrop was a Loyalist from NY who arrived with other Loyalists in New Brunswick in September 1783, probably arriving by ship at Saint John. There were about 14,000 Loyalists who fled from the States in 1783 and went to New Brunswick. That first winter was extremely harsh and many died in impoverished shelters. Many were buried at Salamanca, Sunbury Co., Nova Scotia. In 1784 Sunbury County became New Brunswick. Thomas Carleton helped the Loyalists escape from NY, and he was appointed Lt. Governor of New Brunswick.
John Marsh drew a lot # 1371 on 8/14/1784 in Parrtown, Sunbury, NB. Saint John may have previously been known as Parrtown. On 12/22/1786 John drew for Lot 3 on the Belile River at Maduquack (Mactaquac), York County, NB. He married at Sheffield, Sunbury County in 1790. However, another account states he married at Canning, Carleton Co., NB.
There were other Loyalist Marshes who arrived in New Brunswick about the same time: Cornelius came alone; Joseph came with 2 servants, Richard, a blacksmith from NJ came with a wife and 7 children, William Marsh came with a wife (Anna?) and four children over 10 and two children under 10. This William may have been John's first cousin, the son of Rev. William Marsh.
John L. Marsh was one of the persons organizing the Brunswick Street Baptist Church in Fredericton, New Brunswick and may have resided here later in life. John died at Prince William, New Brunswick, which lies just west of Fredericton on the Saint John River.
Three of John's six children died relatively young, with three sons marrying and having families.
