There is considerable dispute as to whether or not she was the 'bride of Bride Brook' & therefore the mother of Mary Rudd. One alternative is Mary Birchard, chr 2 Feb 1623, Treling, Essex d/o of Thomas Birchard 1595-1683/4, and Mary Robinson 1596/7-1654/5.
Jack Dieterle (DIANEDIE@aol.com) writes on 24 Jul 1997: There is more evidence today that Mary from Bride's Brooke was indeed Mary Metcalf, the daughter of Michael Metcalf and Sarah Elwyn, who was born 14 Feb 1619 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. The information is contained in the book, "Michael Metcalf and His Descendants," by the Reverend F. D. Weis. He states that mary, the daughter of Michael Metcalf and Sarah Elwyn, married a Jonathan Rudd in 1646/47 in Connecticut - without any reference to Bride's Brooke.
The Bingham family has erected a large plaque on a big rock as a memorial to the Bride's Brooke marriage in a park on the bank of Bride's Brooke, near Lyme, CT. It quotes the statement made by John Winthrop about the wedding. His statement comes from the Colonial Particular Court Records in the Archives of Connecticut. It seems there was a dispute over the boundary between the colonies of New London and Saybrook (not between Connecticut and Massachusetts). In the court records generated by the dispute, John Winthrop testified of the marriage that he had conducted at Bride's Brooke during the winter of 1646/57. It is this testimony which appears on the monument at Bride's Brook.
