The only son of Hiram Bingham I was born in Honolulu on August 16, 1831, and was named after his father. In 1840, at the age of nine, he left the islands and went with his family to live in New Haven. He later attended Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale College in 1853.
After graduation he taught school in Northampton, Massachusetts and became principal of the Northampton High School, where his future wife Minerva Clarissa Brewster was a teacher. In 1856 he received the M. A. from Yale and was ordained a minister at New Haven on November 9, 1856. Nine days later he married Minerva Brewster, and two weeks later they sailed from Boston as missionaries to Micronesia on the Brig "Morning Star." They arrived on the Atoll of Apaiang in the Gilbert Islands on November 18, 1857, where they established a Christian mission, in spite of difficulties. The climate is almost unendurable for white men, food was scarce, and the foreign traders who came to the islands were bitterly opposed to missionaries. They stayed in the islands for 7 years until ill health made it necessary to return to Honolulu and eventually to Boston. In 1866 Hiram Bingham II was put in charge as captain of a missionary brig, a second "Morning Star." In 1867 and 1868 they sailed to the Marquesas Islands, the Gilberts, and sixteen different islands in Micronesia, before returning to Honolulu. Five years later, in 1873, Hiram Bingham and his wife went again to preach the gospel in the Gilberts and to stay on Apaiang. Part of his work there was a compilation of a Gilbertese-English dictionary. Illness in 1875 forced the Binghams to leave Apaiang for the last time in 1875. He continued scholarly work in Honolulu until his death in 1908.
American Congregationalist missionary. In 1857 he founded a mission on Abaiang in the Gilbert Islands (now part of Kiribati).
