He was either the son or grandson of the Galfridus Cusyn of Hardingham, Norfolk Co., England, who is mentioned in the Subsidy Rolls for Norfolk in 1327. He added to the original estate in Hardingham - the estates in Hingham which were inherited by his son Thomas.
In the preface to his Cushing genealogy, James Cushing said the work was started by Hon. Caleb Cushing who hired the London genealogist H. G. Somerby. His work was followed by Lemuel Cushing, then Frank Hamilton Cushing - who traced the Cushing name to DeLimisi.
