marr: place given in "The Bingham Family in the United States: The descendants of Thomas Bingham of Connecticut" Compiled and written by Donna Bingham Munger, including contributions from Bingham researchers, published by the Bingham Association, New York, 1996.
story of Bride's Brook given in "Thomas Bingham, Connecticut Pioneer: A Story of Very Early Colonial Times, 1658-1730 Based on Records", by Charles E. Bingham, Pequot Press, Essex, Connecticut, 101 pp., 1968 (pp 23-6)
Jonathan Rudd was married to Mary ____(?), by John Winthrop (the younger), later first Governor of Connecticut Colony, at the Sunkipaug River, the border between Pequot Colony (Massachusetts) and Saybrook Colony (Connecticut) in the winter of 1646-47. Gov. Winthrop later testified in court as to where the boundary of Saybrook was, and referred to Jonathan Rudd by name. The river was renamed Bride Brook in honor of the wedding, and it is still called this today.
At the Thomas Lee house (built ca. 1660 and presently owned by the East Lyme Historical Society), approximately 1/4 mile east of the site of the wedding, there is a dowry chest, which is supposed to have belonged to the couple. It has been dated to approximately the 1640-1680 period, and is inscribed with the initials J.R. and M.M. The bride is thought to have been a Mary Metcalf, but there is conflicting evidence and some confusion about this.
During 1997 there has been a lively Rudd discussion group in which serious doubt as been raised as to who Jonathan's wife was. Best possibility is said to be Mary Burchard and not Mary Metcalf. The latter is the traditional wife which has been published in numerous genealogies, but apparently there is no hard evidence to support this. (this group has largely been lead by Celia G. Snyder (cgsnyder@uiuc.edu) & Kevin K. Stephenson (kevin2@falcon.cc.ukans.edu) as well as several others).
"The American Genealogist", Jan. 1975, p. 17, carries an article by Prentiss Glazier on Thomas and Mary Robinson Birchard. Their second daughter, Mary, was baptised 2 Apr. 1623, in Terling, England. This note is added to the record: 'Dr. Claude W. Barlow informs me that the late Miss Bertha W. Clarke, a careful genealogist, propounded a theory that this Mary might have become the wife of Jonathan Rudd at "Bride Brook," as she thought only Thomas Birchard was sufficiently influential to persuade Governor John Winthrop to come down to perform the ceremony.'
"Clad in Doublet and Hose" by May Kelsey Champion, Ladies Home Journal, Vol IX, No. 11, pp 1-2, October 1892. This article about the wedding at Bride Brook is amusing, but offers no new information except to say that the bride was Ursula Priden daughter of 'Widow Priden'.
http://falcon.cc.ukans.edu/~kevin2/page7.html (part of Kevin Stephenson's home page):
he was one of the first settlers of Saybrook Colony, in what is now Connecticut. Jonathan Rudd came to America before 1640, and was involved in the building of Saybrook Fort and the fitting out of the cannons there under Captain Mason.
Family tradition holds that Jonathan and his wife, Mary (?), were given a dowry chest, which was passed down through the generations by their daughter, Mary Rudd, who married Thomas Bingham. The dowry chest still exists, and is now on display at the Thomas Lee house, East Lyme, Connecticut, the oldest remaining home on the Connecticut coast (built ca 1660). The Lee house is about 1/4 mile from the site of the wedding.
