This individual has the following other parents in the Ancestral File:
Robert /ROYCE/ (AFN:90XC-XJ) and Margay Or M /HAMLIN/ (AFN:90XC-ZP)
freeman at Boston 1 Apr 1634
STRUBE-1.GED file, b; says his par are Robert Royce b 1562 & Mary Hamlin both of Martsock, Sommerset & his grandfather is Thomas Royce
"Descendants of William Royce Rhys" by Lori London; b 1 Mar 1601/02, of Long Sutton, Somerset, Eng., d 1676 New London
Robert Royce was born in England. The date of his arrival in New England is unknown, but there was a Robert Rose who came to America in the ship Francis, from Ipswich, England, in 1634, with a son named Robert (age 15). The name is spelled also as Rice, Roice, and Rose.
Many sources claim that Robert married Mary Sims at Martock, England on 4 June 1634, but that record does not exist. There is a marriage of a Robert Rayce and Mary Sims at Long Sutton (about four miles away) on 4 June 1624, but because of the dates of births of their children, this is not likely the actual marriage record. Thus all we know of Robert's wife is that her given name was Mary.
Robert was an early settler at Stratford, Conn. in 1644. His name is first recorded as owning land, lot #745 on 16 Sep 1648. He's noted again in the land records of Stratford, as Robert "Rise" in 1658.
The General Court appointed him leather sealer for the town on 4 Oct 1656. After this date, there are only two more known records of him in Stratford, relating to the sale of two pieces of property. He sold his home lot in Stratford to Thomas Wheeler 8 Feb 1660 (1669?) "one house lot, one dwelling house upon it, and barn, to Thomas Wheeler, now of Paugusit," and his meadow land was sold to Moses Wheeler in June 1667.
He was in New London, Conn in 1657, where he was named among the first sixteen members of the New London Church. That same year, he was granted the original lot on Post Hill. He was a Constable there in May 1660. In 1661 he was chosen Deputy to the General Court, and again in 1667 and 1669. In Feb 1661-2 and again in Feb 1667, he was appointed leather sealer at New London; and he was townsman there in 1663 and 1668.
In 1663 he petitioned the town to acquire land for his sons Samuel and Nathaniel (successfully).
In Dec 1667, he was one of two men selected "to gather ye Towne Rate in the Towne Plat". He held several other offices, including: Townsman, 25 Feb 1668; juror of the County Court, Sep 1666; grand juror for New London, Sep 1668. In Feb 1666-7, he was chosen to keep the ordinary (tavern) and there he entertained the new minister, Rev. Simon Bradstreet: "To Goodman Royce for ye ministers dyet, 15lb."
In 1667 Robert was "freed from training" probably due to his age.
Robert is reported to have been a shoemaker.
Robert Royce died before 22 Sep 1676 at New London, the date his inventory of his estate was presented to the court. The estate was valued at 420 pounds. His unsigned will was probated at New London and is in the county court records.
