"The Stilwell / Redman Letters"
'... was born in Holland ... where his father Nicholas, with his two brothers, John and Jasper, fled, on account of religious persecution, from thence he was brought to America by his father, and accompanied by his father's two brothers, in 1638. In 1649, his father purchased for him a plantation at Gravesend, Long Island, where he settled and married.

In 1664, he was appointed under the Duke of York of the Justices Wert Riding of Yorkshire, comprising Staten Isalnd and the Western portion of Long Island.
In 1680, he removed to Staten Island where he took up 160 acres of land upon which his uncle (John Cook) his father-in-law also, had originally located.'
