According to a letter written by James H. Barnett of the Mansfield Historical Society to Mrs Frances Allen Dunn, a descendant of Jacob Marsh, William Marsh was a member of his father's (Thomas) church. In 1749, Wm. bought land at Four Corners (Mansfield) and was said to be from Willington, CT. William led a schismatic group of Separatists to Wantage (Newton), Sussex, NJ in 1751. Dawn Hance, however, says that they settled at Hanburg, NJ. One source claims that Wm. had founded the Baptist Church in Mansfield in 1749-50, and that it was this group that followed him to NJ. This church in NJ was named Dickerstown Baptist Church. After a few years, Wm. gave up leadership of the church since his doctrinal views did not suit the congregation in Wantage and he relocated to the not too distant west in Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, where he was killed by Indians. It is said that son, Wm., Jr., was born at Newton in 1754.
On November 9, 1757, Rev. Wm. Marsh was at S. Dover, Dutchess, NY, to explain the Baptist nature of the Covenant; and so it was in that year that the First Baptist Church of Dover was organized. Dover had previously been known as Pawling. It was said in the church records that Rev. Wm. was of NJ at this time.
In 1753 a land company called, "Susquehanna Company" was formed chiefly by Connecticut farmers from Windham Co., CT, for the purpose of colonization of the Wyoming Valley in PA. The Wyoming Valley may have been also known as the Susquehenna Valley. This company was made up of about 600 citizens. Agents were sent to explore this region which had a very rich soil. The governor of PA disputed this idea and the Governor of CT warned against it; but settlement of 200 people of which 118 were men from CT took place in 1762 and they settled at Mill Creek or Wilkes-Barr, PA today. This large tract of land (Wyoming Valley) was gained in a treaty in July of 1754 with the Five Nations for $10,000.
Only 73 names of the 118 men are known today of those original settlers. This was the first white settlement in the area.
They cleared the land, sowed the wheat and built log houses. They returned to CT and returned the following spring (1763) with their families. That Fall the Iroquois visited the area to incite the Delaware Indians and to get rid of a certain chief who had a lot of influence. They killed this chief and the Iroquois led the Delaware Indians to believe that it was done by the white settlers. The Delaware Indians killed 30 settlers, others fled, and the settlement was burned. Rev. William and Thomas Marsh were two of 11 people listed who lost their lives on October 15,1763. Two men were taken prisoner. It is believed that Thomas Marsh may have been William's brother.
Notes: Information taken from Internet, "WILKES - BARRE, Town History" by Pat Krivak and also "The First Settlement at Wilkes-Barre" by Rose Vosler. The Colonial Dames Society presented a marker which was placed at Wilkes-Barr on 6/14/1944 in memory of these early settlers.
There were brutal massacres going on in the hostile Wyoming Valley of PA for a period of many years -- from the French and Indian Wars through the Rev. War; one such battle was known as the "Wyoming Valley Massacre" which took place during the Revolution. Some who had settled in the Wyoming Valley of PA had come as a group from Duchess County, NY. These Indians were from Canada and fought viciously for the French against the British & Colonists, enjoying the torturing, tomahawking & scalping of their subjects.
The CT settlers had lost their land in the Wyoming Valley different times through the various wars, but they always seemed to regain it. Gov. Penn had taken their land from them in 1771, but again they regained it.
There is a creek in Luzerne County named Marsh Creek, possibly named after William and his relatives.
One source claims Wm. & Eunice settled in VT. I find this doubtful.
