http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/o/o/James--C-Woodard/GENE4-0013.html ... came to New England in 1630, sailing from Yarmouth, April 8, 1630, in the ship 'Arbella,' three hundred and fifty tons, carrying 28 guns and 52 men, and arriving in Salem on June 12, 1630. He was deputy governor in 13 years, governor in 1634, 1640, 1645 and 1650, and assistant five years. He served 4 years as major-general, under appointment by the general court in 1644. Governor Dudley vigorously opposed the doctrine preached by Rev. John Cotton that the secular government should be subservient to the priesthhod. Cotton Mather said of him: "He was a man of sincere piety, exact justice, hospitality to strangers and liberality to the poor."
Facts from: Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, pg. 571 & 1264. Governor Dudley lived in Northampton as a young man and served under King Henry IV of France at the Seige of Amiens.
