It appears that William may have been orphaned when he was about nine yrs. of age in 1763. It is not known who raised him. It is believed that this William Marsh came to Clarendon, VT in 1769 with his brother, Daniel, and his two uncles, Jacob and Amos Marsh. These men spent the winter, here, clearing the land and building 5 log dwellings so that their families could move there the following spring. However, it is reported that William did not return with the rest of the Marshes the following spring but had moved North (Canada?) and was not heard from again.
Frances Dunn a descendant, found discharge papers of Wm Marsh from the King's Rangers at St. John's on December 24, 1783. I presume this is St. John's, New Brunswick. Wife's name, Anna; children: Jane, Eunice, Ruth, Triphene, Lury & Ashey. Found in the Lower Canada Land Records (RG 1, L 3 L)
William, a Tory, may have moved to Canada before the Revolution. Here he explored new territories and was the agent of several of the emigrants in their petitions to the King for land in Canada. It is said that he often traveled with Rev. William Marsh in Canada, who was his first cousin. To differentiate the two Williams, this Wm. being the elder was called Wm. Sr. and his younger cousin was referred to as Wm. Jr.
There was a William Marsh who had gone to New Brunswick, and was living in the same area where John Lothrop Marsh, a Loyalist, also settled. If this Wm. is the son of Rev. Wm. Marsh, then he and John Lothrop would be first cousins. John came to this area in September 1783. It is not known, however, whether that Wm. was this Wm. The Wm. Marsh of New Brunswick signed a petition for land in 1787 in Kings County and stated that he cleared the land and that it was for his son Wm. who was 17. Therefore, Wm. Jr. was b. Abt. 1770 and Wm. Sr. could have been b. Abt. 1745. The Lot # was 31, petition # F0135 and was called "Little Kennebecasis" on the Hammond River. William, Sr. already had a land grant for himself in this same area #1108 dated 8/14/1784. Wm. Sr. was said to be a blacksmith. His wife's name may have been Ann. They had children: Wm., Leonard, John, Sarah, Joseph & Miss Marsh. When this Wm. arrived in N.B., he was listed as a Loyalist and with him was one woman, four children over 10, and two under 10. The family may have arrived in 1783. The William Marsh spoken of here may not be this William for he seems a little too old and our William's children's names do not match this William's. This William moved to Ontario in 1797. More research is necessary.
Also there was a Wm. Marsh who was possibly with Oliver Delancey's Brigade. He joined Delancey's corps at Corland's Manor in 1776 (Quebec?)
