Abigail's mom died when she was about 4 yrs., and she was raised by her step-mother, Eunice Marsh Dimock. Abigail was probably the only sibling who did not move to Nova Scotia with her parents. Instead, she remained in Mansfield and married Amos Marsh who was a first cousin to her step-mother.
Of Abigail's six siblings, only two brothers lived to adulthood and went to Nova Scotia with their parents, living out their lives there. Abigail, also, had several half brothers & sisters who lived in NS.
It appears that Ebenezer Howard & Abigail were living at Clarendon, VT, bet. 1782-1785 and he was on the 1785 Vermont Territory Petition list there. In 1792 she was listed as a widow. Supposedly, Ebenezer improperly sold Amos's property to Ebenezer Pitcher & sons which should have gone to Amos's heirs. Daniel Marsh, nephew to Amos Marsh, Sr., petitioned the legislature in 1791 in behalf of the children heirs to solve the problem. This petition is on file with the Sec. of State for Vermont, Manuscript Division. Apparently, the heirs were awarded their share and in 1792, they sold their shares to their cousin, Daniel & Phebe Marsh, who were also acting as guardians to four of Amos & Abigail's children: Daniel, Lemuel, Lydia, & Israel.
Abigail may have had a child, Ebenezer Howard, Jr., born to her & second husband. There was an Ebenezer Howard living at Shrewsbury, VT in the 1820 census and one by that name at New Haven, VT, in the 1830 and 1850 census. According to Patra Hepworth, in the 1820 census for Weybridge, there is an Abigail Howard who is living alone, seven doors down from Amos, Jr.; and in the 1830 census, Abigail may have been living with son, Israel & family. Was this our Abigail and did she have a son Ebenezer, Jr. who were both living in 1820 in Addison County?
An account on Internet has the name "Joseph Hyde, Jr.?" in parenthesis after Mr. Howard's name. I have no idea who Mr. Hyde was -- a third husband? Also, author, Dawn Hance, states that Abigail may have married "old Mister Bates."
C.W. Marsh has that Abigail died in Ashford, CT, in 1837. This would make her 95 yrs. of age. I don't know what her connection was to Ashford. This probably needs more research.
