William took his mom and younger siblings to Caldwell's Manor (Clarenceville), Canada East (Quebec) about 1783 after his father's land was confiscated by the U.S. government. It is said that the Marsh and Huntington families went together. Caldwell's Manor was near the VT/Canadian border, north of Lake Champlain. His older sister, Anne, had remarried and lived in Canterbury, CT. His sister, Eunice and husband, Robert Brisbin, Loyalists, may have preceded them in going to Caldwell's Manor Abt. 1777, or did they travel together?
Caldwell's Manor was not a house or a settlement but a large grant of land granted to Henry Caldwell of Belmont, Quebec. Here Wm. cleared some land, sowed winter wheat and built a log cabin. In the winter of 1783 or 84, Wm. moved his family to a new home. A settlement grew on Caldwell's Manor far from a mill or market. Times were hard and they were on leased land; but as the country became more settled, times improved. In 1786, William married his first cousin, Elizabeth Huntington.
Since Wm. could read better than the other men at Caldwell's Manor, he was chosen to be their religious leader, reading to them the sermons of Mr. Whitefield. It was in in the reading of one of these sermons based on Jeremiah 8-16 that he was convicted of his own sinful nature and later went on to be a Baptist preacher for the remaining 50 years of his life. His wife was opposed to him becoming a preacher since it would mean a life of poverty. His ordination as a Baptist preacher took place in 1796. The church prospered under his ministry.
About 1797, many who had settled at Caldwell's Manor (Clarenceville, Quebec today) attempted a new settlement at the base of the Green Mts. in the Twp. of Sutton, Quebec. It is believed that finally the Loyalists had received land grants, including William Marsh. It was unusual for the Sutton grantees to receive their personal grants since usually land grants were made only to a leader and his associates.
Was Rev. Wm.'s cousin, the elder William Marsh, instumental in getting land grants for these new citizens?
Later, a plaque was placed on a boulder at Sutton with the names of William Marsh and William Huntingdon, designating them as its first settlers. One historical account says that Wm. Huntington was the father-in-law of Rev. Wm., but this is very questionable since descendants have documentation that Simon Huntington was his father-in-law. Wm. was the son of Simon and may have been a first cousin to Rev. Wm since their mothers were sisters. Also, the two Williams were brothers-in-law to each other since Wm. Huntington's sister was Wm. Marsh's wife. In 1806, Wm. Huntington sold his land grant in Sutton to Elijah Billings which is now the area where the town of Sutton sits. Here they formed another church, the Olivet Baptist Church, on what was called Sutton's Flat. The Marshes lived here for some years. Caldwell's Manor, Sutton's Flat, and Durham were all somewhat close to each other.
William worked hard on his farm, made shoes in the winter months, and travelled through the remote wilderness preaching and baptizing as he went in all the townships surrounding him. It was while making shoes that he had his young son, Israel, read to him from the Bible. Israel later went on to take over as preacher of his father's church.
From the memoirs written, it appears that Israel spent much time at his father's side, having a very close relationship with him.
Wm. sold his farm at Sutton in 1813, purchasing land in Hatley Twp. near Durham, Quebec. In Feb. 1825, Wm. and his family moved to Whitby, Ontario, which is west of Oshawa and east of Toronto. Son, Israel, probably made the move to Whitby about two years later. At Whitby, Wm. found the church small and almost destitute. He began preaching here and the church prospered under his ministry. He also preached at Port Perry in the back country north of Whitby. Abt. 1842, when he was getting too feeble, his son Israel took over his church.
William had 7 Dau. and one son, Isaac, having lost 5 sons and 1 Dau. in infancy, having had 14 in all.
Two of his married daughters with families, Amy & Elizabeth?, died before their father.
Residences:
Caldwell's Manor, Missisquoi Co., C.E. 1783 - 1797 (Abt. 14 yrs.)
Sutton, Brome Co., Quebec 1797 - 1810 (Abt. 13 yrs.)
Hatley, Stansted Co., Quebec ? Abt. 1812/13 ( 1 yr.)
Dunham, Missisquoi Co, Quebec 1813 - 1825 (Abt. 12 yrs.) -- an historical book states that Wm. was at Stanbridge during this time frame -- not sure which is correct
Stanbridge, Quebec Abt. 1821 (1 year while son managed farm in Dunham)
Whitby, York Co., C.W. Abt. 1825 - 1843 (Abt. 18 yrs.)
Port Perry, C.W died at son's (an historical book says he died 3/15/1843
Rev. Wm. had a sister, daughter, granddaughter, and niece who married into the Groat family. The Demaray, Marsh, Huntington, Fuller & Groat families frequently intermarried, usually marrying their first cousins.
It appears that late in life, two of his daughters, Jane Demaray & Lydia Groat came to Sanilac & St. Clair Counties of Michigan, respectively.
Rev. Wm. was also known as Wm., Jr. even though his father was not Wm., Sr. "Jr." was tagged to his name to keep him straight from his older first cousin, whom they called, "Wm., Sr."
Abt. 1794 Polly Marsh was b. to Amasa Marsh & Parmelia Lebaron at Hately, Stansted, Quebec. Amasa & Parmelia prob. also had a son Amasa, Jr. b. Abt. 1798 who married Sarah Little dau. of Abijah Little & Elizabeth Bean. After Amasa & Sarah m. at Sutton, they moved to Hatley having 9 children. It is not know whether these Marshes were related to Rev. Wm. Marsh. His age could make him a brother, but I have never seen him listed as a brother. Also, it is wondered whether he was a first cousin to this William.
