Some claim William was born in 1653 (THE COLONIAL NEW ENGLAND ANCESTORS), but no one seems to have documentation of his birth. The greater consensus, however, is that he was born in 1642.
Following, are a few views of the origins of William Marsh of Plainfield, CT:
In the book, "John Marsh of Hartford" written by Dwight W. Marsh, Riverius Marsh, a descendant of William, contributes information regarding William Marsh of England who came to America. He states that William of Plainfield had a brother James, of Kent, England who was beheaded by order of Oliver Cromwell. Capt. James Marsh had been a supporter of Charles I. It was following the Battle of Edgehill in the English Civil War that this order was given. It was at this point that William's sisters took him out of college in England and sent him to America. It is believed that Wm. brought two of his nephews with him who were his half sister's children.

Warren L. Marsh (now deceased), of Williamsport, PA, contributed information concerning William Marsh of Plainfield to the MARSH FAMILY BULLETIN, Volume I, Number (4), July 1955. Most accounts indicate that William was born in 1642, which Warren believed, and that William came to America in 1660 at the time of the restoration of King Charles II to the throne to escape his wrath. This was the same year that his brother, James, was executed. Warren Marsh indicates a possibility that William may have come over as an indentured servant to gain free passage to America. The length of service was usually seven to fifteen years. This would account for little information between 1660 and 1675.

Another account that came from Prof. Wilson Brown where he quotes information from the book of Bruce Stinson: "William Marsh arrived in CT shortly after the Restoration of the Stuarts in 1660. There appears to be no written record of what happened in England; but in his book Bruce C. Stinson relates a story that William's father, James, was a captain under Charles I. His conduct in the Battle of Edgehill, one of the first battles of the Enlish Civil War, appeared to Charles to be disloyal; and he had James beheaded. James left young children, at least William, who seems to have been born in 1642, the year his father died. The family was wealthy (but not aristocratic) and lived in an area that is now London. An aunt purportedly financed William's trip to the colonies so that he would be far from the reach of any continued Stuart reprisals."
Another descendant, Marlene Fuerlinger, claims that Wm. came to America with a brother James. I question this as she has James being born in 1644, which would have been two years after the death of their father.
History: The Battle at Edgehill took place in 1642 when Charles I was king. At this time Oliver Cromwell was a British captain and a member & influential leader of Parliament. Cromwell was promoted to Colonel in 2/1643, and it was a couple of years before he gained power --1645, when Charles I's forces were defeated by Cromwell and he fled to Scotland. Charles I reigned 1625-1645 and he was considered a tyrant. Cromwell reigned from 1645- 1658 and had Charles I beheaded in 1649 since he was trying to regain power. Cromwell's son reigned unsucessfully for two years after his father's death. The Stuart kings were brought back into power with the crowning of Charles II in 1660, the same year William supposedly took the boat to America at age 18 and 18 yrs. after his father's death at Edgehill. Perhaps William's relatives were concerned that the Stuarts were still seeking some kind of revenge, sending young Wm. to America to avoid the new king's wrath.
Some have tried to identify a William Marsh, age 26, who sailed from London in 1635 aboard the "Mathew", whose master was Goodlad and whose destination was St. Christopher with our ancestor, William Marsh. The claim is that this older William Marsh was in Boston in 1636 and could not be our William who died in Plainfield, CT in 1724. He would have been 113 years old. Riverius Marsh, also, indicated that both of these William Marshes lived in Plainfield and indicated that they may have been related. If an earlier William Marsh existed, he may have been b. Abt. 1610 and d. Abt. 1685 at Plainfield, CT.
It has been reported that our ancestor, William Marsh of Plainfield, came from a village or borough four miles outside of the city of London, England, which is now incorporated in that city. The Marshes owned mills and were engaged in the mercantile business.
Another thought is that William of Plainfield may have originated in Barham, Kent, UK. According to Charles W. Marsh of Salt Lake City, Utah, there are several very old Marsh tombstones in a church graveyard there, and the area is said to be very lovely.
Jonathan Marsh of Braintree, MA states that our William Marsh landed at Salem, went to Boston, was commissioned as captain in the Indian War, was wounded in the battle at Narragansett on December 19, 1675, was sent to Stonington, CT, to recuperate from his wounds, and that Elizabeth Yeomans had been his nurse. He married her in 1682. Most of his children were born in Stonington, New London Co., CT. Today, Stonington is a small community but may have covered a vast area when Wm. was there. The family may have moved to Plainfield, CT about 1694/95. William was one of the surveyors of Plainfield, and it became incorporated five years later in May of 1699. The First Congregational Church, the church that the Marsh family later attended, was organized in 1705.
His name was listed in a Plainfield, CT. history book -- Vol. 3 of a set of 3 according to Marcus Jones, an email correspondent from Stonington, CT. These books are no longer in the Plainfield Library and may no longer exist.
Other non-related early Marshes were: George Marsh, who settled at Hingham, MA; Alexander Marsh, who settled in Braintree, MA in 1654.
William, Elizabeth and family were members of the First Congregational Church in Stonington, CT. In England this religious body was known as the Separatists. In subsequent generations of this family, there were descendants who were First Congregational preachers.
William and family moved to the Plainfield, CT, area around 1695 where it is said that he and brother-in-law, John Yeomans, are credited as its founders. William was one of the surveyors of the new town as was his brother-in-law, Edward Yeomans, Jr. It is also said that William Marsh executed deeds at Plainfield to his two brothers-in-law, Edward & John Yeomans.
William & Elizabeth Yeomans Marsh died and were buried in Plainfield, CT as were some of their descendants.
William Marsh may have had a sister, Mary Marsh, living in Stonington, CT. She was b. Abt. 1647 and married Joseph Palmeter in 1666. Their son, Daniel I. Palmeter was b. 1667 in Stonington. Wiliam was b. Abt. 1642. Supposedly, a document which had been in the possession of Cyrus Marsh claims that a couple of sisters came to America with William. So could Mary be a sister?
