21 v1 p406 JOSIAH CLEVELAND was born 7
October 1690 at Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He died 9 February 1750 in Canterbury, Connecticutt. He married Abigail
Paine on 7 August 1710 in Canterbury. Abigail Paine, daughter of Elisha and Rebecca (Doane) Paine, was born 5 January 1686 at Eastham, Massachusetts, and died 26 August 1762, probably at Canterbury.
Josiah Cleveland journeyed with his
family as a young boy from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, to Canterbury, Conn. In Canterbury, after attaining manhood, he became a man of wealth and of prominence in both the town and church affairs. He was a member of the Separatist faith.

Josiah, b. 4 Apr. 1713; died 7 May 1793 at Canterbury; mar/1 15 Oct. 1735 at Canterbury to Sarah Lawrence, only d/o Daniel and Sarah, b. 7 Feb. 1709 at Plainfield, CT, died 6 Feb. 1755 at Canterbury. Mar/2 5 June 1755 at Canterbury to Joanna Waldo Brewster, wid/o Jonah and d/o Edward and Thankful (Dinock), b. 18 Apr. 1723, died 4 Apr. 1803. Josiah Cleveland lived in Canterbury, was a farmer and
tanner, and was a deacon in the Congregational Church of Canterbury.
iii. Abigail, b. 3 June 1715; died either 15 or 19 Dec 1782 at the Cleveland homestead, North Society, Canterbury; married John Adams s/o John and Michal (Bloyse), b. 14 Dec. 1695 at Medfield, MA, died 16 Jan. 1762 at Canterbury.
**iv. Elisha, b. 7 Jan. 1716 v. Lois, b. 11 Dec 1718; died 26 Sept 1736 in Canterbury, unmarried. vi. Mary, b. 29 June 1720; died 6 Aug. 1765 at Canterbury; married 6 Apr 1743 at Canterbury to widow William Bradford, s/o Lt James and Edith or Lt James and Susannah (Adams), b. 1 July 1718, died about 1780. William Bradford lived his entire life at Canterbury, was a farmer. He was killed by a sudden blow from his
horse's head, raised quickly as he was stooping.

John, b. 11 April 1722; died 22 April 1799 at Ipswich, MA; mar/1 15 July 1747 at Ipswich to Mary Dodge, only d/o Parker and Mary (Choate), b. 1 Mar 1723 at Ipswich, died 21 Apr 1769 at Chebacco, Ipswich; mar/2 28 Sept 1760 at Salem, MA to Mary (Neale) Foster, wid/o Capt John and d/o Joseph and Eunice (Pickering), b. 29 Mar babtized 5 Apr 1730 in Salem, died 19 Apr 1810 at Chebacco, now Essex. Rev John Cleveland, one of the most prominent members of the family, was a distinguished
divine, a public-spirited man, and a powerful writer and speaker. Attended Yale College, 1741 to 1745 -- was expelled before he graduated because of sympathies for the Separatist movement of which his uncle, Elisha Paine, was leading. Was in
French and Indian War, 1756-60; entered Continental Army 19 May 1775, was Chaplain at Cambridge buring Boston seige.

ix. Ebenezer, b. 25 Dec 1725; died 4 July 1805 at Gloucester, Sandy Bay, now Rockport at Cape Ann, MA; mar. 16 Oct 1745 at Groton, CT to Abigail Stevens, d/o
Cyprian and Abigail (Johnson) of Killingly, CT, b. 1727, died 25 Dec 1804 at Gloucester. Rev. Cleveland commenced preaching at Sandy Bay in 1751. Attended Yale, 1744-48. Was in French and Indian War as Chaplain of a MA regiment and in Revolution-ary War as a Chaplain. Because of their interest in the Separatist Church, both John and Ebenezer were expelled from Yale before graduating; but were later
reinstated and received diplomas about 1765 and were listed with their previous classes for the year of graduation.
x. Aaron, b. 27 Nov 1727; died 4 Apr 1785 at Canterbury, had palsy and died after a lingering illness; married 18 June 1748 at Canterbury to his cousin, Thankful Paine, d/o Rev Elisha and Mary (Johnson), b. 5 Apr 1733 at Canterbury, died 29 or 30
Sept 1822 at Canterbury. Col Cleveland resided at Canterbury as a farmer; was a man of wealth and prominence in CT. He was Capt. in French and Indian War, at Ft Edward the winter of 1756/57 with his command.
xi. Moses, b. 18 Apr 1730; died 1 Jan 1741 at Canterbury.
