BIOGRAPHY: "Forbes Line Chart": 'to whom Alexander III of Scotland, by a charter dated in 1272, granted "Terras et tenementum de Forbeys["], Fergus is said by Lord Granard to have been the Grandson of one o'Conacre [note at side: 'spelled also O'Choncar & Chonochar'] who came from Ireland in the 12th Century, with a body of men for the service of the King of Scotland, & who received the lands of Logie, on the banks of the river Don.'
Note at side of chart: 'some authorities call him Duncan. all Forbes descend from him.'
Another note: 'Fergus & Duncan may have been brothers. Name Forbes may have come from French DeBois bours or lears [??, these three names are not at all clear]
In 1236 Fergus of Forbes received a charter for lands in Aberdeenshire from the Earl of Buchan

Mathias owned large tracts of land in CT and in Duchess Co., NY. He had purchased 436 acres in several parcels in western CT from his father-in-law, Elnathan Brigham. One of these parcels ran along both sides of the West Aspetuck River leading to Kent, CT and other pieces adjoining these. Also, one parcel was on Long Mountain. Later, he sold some of this land to his brother William who passed it on to son, Rev. Cyrus Marsh. Eventually, this land was in the hands of Elihu Marsh, Sr. and his descendants. He resided at Coventry, CT from 1729-1750, where most of his children were born. He may have been in Duchess County Bet. 1751 & 1755 - 1765. He lived at Amenia (Nine Partners), Dutchess and was living in Dover, Beekman's Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY as late as 1765. Matthias, along with other men, laid claims to land just west of the Oblong in 1765. At that time there were squabbles over land ownership. It is claimed that Amenia was previously known as Nine Partners (It is possible that 9 men went together purchasing a very large tract of land in Dutchess County). These wealthy land owners bought large tracts of land and then would sub-let their lands. The renters would purchase a long-term right to use the land. Matthias sold his land in NY in 1764 and moved to Dorset, VT where he died shortly after the Revolution ended.
9 Partners Patent was granted in 1697 to Caleb Heathcote & others and embraced Clinton, Pleasant Valley, Washington, Stanford, & Amenia. It did not include "the Oblong."
The Oblong, ceded in 1731, was 580 rods in width and divided into tiers of square lots consisting of 500 acres each and was sold by the colonial government of NY. This narrow strip abutted the state of CT. The patents were brought to an end by the Rev. War. Some of the Oblong lots were included in Amenia, Dover, Pawling, etc. At first the name Oblong applied to the whole tract; but after a few years, it was limited to the valley in Amenia. Amenia was formed as a precinct in 1762 and as a town in 1788. It is believed that Matthias Marsh and possibly the John Marsh families had land in the Oblong.
It appears that the Matthias Marsh families, John Marsh families, Jeremiah French and Ebenezer Cole families had a lot of land dealings in common, owning land in Litchfield Co, CT, Duchess Co., NY and eventually Shaftsbury, VT area.
There was a Mary Marsh b. at Coventry, CT, 12/24/1734 who m. Amaziah Rust, Sr. It is not known whether she may have been a daughter of Matthias. Matthias was living at Coventry at the time.
A Silas Marsh was Supervisor/Twp.. clerk in 1776 of Amenia. It is not known whether he was related to our Marshes, and there is no evidence to suggest that he was.
