"Our Royal Descent from Alfred 'the Great'...", Steve Clare genealogy papers, p 52, Knight & Lord of Dudley in right of his wife
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/o/o/James--C-Woodard/GENE4-0024.html b & d; this source says his parents were
Richard de Sutton, born September 29, 1266, son of Robert de Sutton and Johanna
and
Isabella Patrick, dau of William Patrick
Sir John married Lady Margaret de Somery (Somerie), daughter of Roger de Somery, Lord Dudley, who died in 1300; Lady Margaret's brother, John de Somery died without issue leaving the lands and titles, and the castle of Dudley to Sir John de Sutton in right of his wife. Sir John de Sutton had served as a knight in the retinue of his brother-in-law. Sir John de Sutton later alienated the castle and manor of Dudley to Hugh le Despencer, by deed 19 October 1325; but this grant, extorted from him by force while in prison, was cancelled in 1327 on the accession of King Edward III, and the property restored to the Sutton Dudleys
