While not yet of age he was one of the Chief Commnaders at the memorable "Battle of the Standard" against the Scotts in 1138. He acquired great renown, Crusader 1148. His grants of the Church were munificent. He founded several Abbeys and Priories, beautiful 'Byland' among them, where he was buried. He was in two Crusades & finally took the cowl as an humble 'Cistercian'
