With his son AEthelbald, he won a notable victory over the Danes at Aclea (851). He married Judith of France in 856. A man of great piety, he learned while on a pilgrimage in Rome that AEthelbald would resist his return. He left his son as king in Wessex and ruled in Kent and its dependencies.
