per http://rms-republic.com/passengers.html he, along with his wife Martha and daughter Olga (as well as their maid Mary Monahan), was on board the outward bound R.M.S. Republic when it collided with in-bound immigrant ship S.S. Florida on 23 January 1909. The ship sank off Nantucket but most of the passengers were rescued.
