The English astronomer and physicist Sir James Hopwood Jeans is best known for his work in statistical mechanics, his theory of the origin of the solar system, and his popularization of science. His early work on kinetic molecular theory led him to refine Rayleigh's law of the distribution of blackbody radiation. It has since been known as the Rayleigh-Jeans law. Although Jeans initially hoped to preserve classical physics, he was an early advocate of the quantum theory and helped to spread its acceptance.
The work of Jeans on the stability of rotating masses resulted in one of his most popular theories, now discounted, that planetary systems could not be formed from a rotating contracting mass. He proposed instead the collision hypothesis, in which a close encounter between two stars pulled the planetary matter from one star. The supposed rarity of such an encounter implied that our planetary system, and its accompanying life, must be unique. Jean's most popular works include The Universe Around Us (1929) and The Mysterious Universe (1930). Bibliography: Milne, E. A., Sir James Jeans (1952).
