Fearing imprisionment during the American Revolution he fled (or was sent by his father?) to the Azores leaving his first wife & 2 children behind in Boston.
In 1778 he married his second wife after she and her parents were shipwrecked on the Island of Miguel in the Azores.
In 1795 was nominated U.S. Vice Consul by Thomas Jefferson.
