High-King of Britain Gwrtheyrn Gwrtheneu (the Thin) in Welsh. Vortigern is apparently merely a title meaning "Over-King". There are some indications that his real name was Gwidol (Welsh) or Vitalis (Latin), though his origins are obscure. His power-base was always the area that now spans the Welsh border: his eldest son set up a thriving kingdom in Powys, though Vortigern appears to have held sway in Gloucester in his early years. His great grandfather is usually said to have been Gloyw Gwallthir (Long-Hair), one of the city's supposed founders. His name may well be synonymous with the place itself: "Gloucester Long-Wall", though some think the appendage to his name indicates he was a long-haired Pict.

Vortigern's family had lived in Glevum (Gloucester) before the Romans departed.
Being a man of some influence in the town, Vortigern had managed to impose himself as the local leader in the area and, before long, he had taken control of the whole country as High-King of Britain. He is known to the Welsh as Gwrtheyrn Gwertheneu (Vortigern the Thin). As a man with no Imperial connections, he was viewed as a usurper by Roman legitimists, though he tried to consolidate his position by marrying a daughter of Magnus Maximus. His downfall is closely entwined with the story of the coming of the Saxons and the rise of the House of the great King Arthur
Historia Brittonum, C.66; the name of Vitalinus is very much connected with Vortigern. A Vitalinus is mentioned in C.66 as fighting an Ambrosius in 437 at the battle of Guoloph. Likewise, Vortigern is also fighting Ambrosius (Aurelianus) in all later sources. Also, Vitalinus is the name of Vortigern's grandfather or even that of his entire family. When one combines this with the possibility that the Guithelinus mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth is the same person as Vortigern (below), one may come to the conclusion that Vortigern is a political name, taken by a man originally called Vitalinus.
Historia Brittonum, C.49; Gwrtheyrn Gwrteneu or Vortigern the Thin (This may have referred to his old age), son of Vitalis, son of Vitalinus, son of Gloiu.
? Bp. of London, 400-425
Geoffey of Monmouth, Historia Regum Bittanniae, VI.2-6. Guithelinus, archbishop of London, was the leader of the Britons after the Romans left. No other sources ever mention him, and he conveniently disappears when Vortigern enters the story. Though Geoffrey or his sources clearly did not know of a connection, Guithelinus or Vitalinus may simply have been Vortigern himself, before he took that name for political reasons.
King of Britain 425-441
Historia Brittonum, C.66; We can be fairly certain of Vortigern's accession in 425. Though he was later called a king, his title may even have been Augustus or just Rex Britanniae. With the revolt of the federates in 441 he lost his position - his son Vortimer took it from him, or else it was without real power, as a Saxon minion.
b. 370, d.443?/455?
[3837] MACALGED.GED file; "The Ipswich Emersons..." says he may have been the postmaster at Scrooby and the famous elder of the Pilgrims of 1620
