from email of 22 Apr 2001 from Eileen Wills (Razorwire3@aol.com) and from the book "The American Ancestors of William R. Benham and Helen M. Bingham" by Lela (Shepherd) Wilkins and some of her Benham cousins:
Col. Elijah Bingham of E. Haddam, who had it from his father; "Two brothers came from Eng. and took up residence in New London, but soon one of them died and his family returned to Eng. The other brother, whose name was Thomas, soon removed to Windhamm where he lived and died leaving 7 sons, all of them over six feet in height. All lived to great age and died in succession as born. They were all religeous men, Puritanical in their principles, and much renowned as musicians and singers."
"It will be remembered that their father came to America in the time of Cromwell, and that their mother, Mary Rudd, was very musically talented."

From "Three Generations of the Sumner Family" Holman, TAG V19:
"William Sumner and his family ... came to New England in 1634. In 1636, he was chosen one of the twenty men to order the town's affairs; and from that time on for many years, his name constantly appears in the records of the town as holding positions of trust, he being a selectman for 23 years, a rater of taxes for 5 years, and a Commissioner of end small causes (i.e., a Justice of the Peace) for 9 years."
